For the most part, Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a family affair but there are a few things to consider. For instance, you should avoid the bawdy crowds in the French Quarter on Mardi Gras day (March 1), and probably stay away from parades that feature political satire. That said, you should feel free to bring the kids to most parades. Why should the grown-ups have all the fun?
One of the most fun and creative night parades is the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus. The krewe says their organization is for “Star Wars Freaks, Trekkies, Whovians, Mega-Geeks, Gamers, Cosplayers, Circuit Benders, Cryptozoologists, UFO Conspiracy Theorists, Mad Scientists, and all the rest of Super Nerdom.” Despite their mission – “Saving the galaxy one drunken nerd at a time” – most locals consider it to be a whole lot of fun for the entire family.
This year, Chewbacchus will roll on Saturday, February 5th at 7 p.m. in the Marigny. Unlike other parades that draw crowds with huge double decker floats, at Chewbacchus you can expect to see decorated tricycles, shopping carts, rickshaws, and golf carts. The krewe rules forbid any "sexually-related" throws and encourage instead "any and all eyeball related toys."
Before you come to this or any parade, check their websites to make sure you feel comfortable. Ultimately, you’ll have to decide for yourself, but we believe your little Princess Leias and Luke Skywalkers will have a great time at Chewbacchus!
